A 16-year-old girl, while poring over photographs in the family album, saw one of herself as a baby and asked: "Mom, when was this taken?" The mother replied, "I don't remember." It was a picture of the girl when she was only a few months old, with her grandfather leaning over her and rubbing his nose to hers, Eskimo style. Then she saw another photo of herself, still as an infant, this time with a dog – a white Spitz – leaning over the bed and looking at her. This female dog, still a puppy then, was the family's pet and would lick the baby girl's feet each time she was allowed to get near her. "Mom, when was this photo taken?" Again the mother answered, "Honey, I'm sorry, but again I can't remember exactly when." Memories don't have to be created during special occasions.
