Mealtime is sacred in France; even casual meals are sometimes made up of three solid courses and lunch lasts a good hour and a half, even on a work day. Further proof of this major aspect of French culture; the French language is peppered with sayings and adages in direct relation with food. A favorite is: C’est autour d’une table que les amis savourent le bonheur d’être ensemble (It is around the table that friends understand best the warmth of being together). This saying perfectly sums up the importance of sharing a good meal with loved ones. These days, we all too often tempted to wolf down a sandwich or junk food on our feet or while at our desks. This Bastille week-end, make like the French and sit down with friends and family for a home-cooked meal. Remember: Mangez bien, riez souvent, aimez beaucoup (Eat well, laugh often, love much).
