Of all the Catholic saints, one stands out as much beloved and venerated by many. St. Francis of Assisi was born into a wealthy family in Assisi, Umbria, a region in central Italy, during the 12th century. At an early age he showed sympathy for the poor. In his early thirties he founded what would become the Franciscan Order, and the Second Franciscan Order of Poor Ladies, or Poor Clares. Both orders made a vow of poverty, humility, and charity. Do Justice, Love Mercy and Walk Humbly with your God. – Micah 6:8
St. Francis always demonstrated a profound concern for the poor. He believed in living simply. He also loved the earth, which is why one of the pictures most associated with him shows him surrounded by flora and fauna. He believed in fostering peace — not by the sword — but through love and kindness. There’s a prayer, called Prayer of St. Francis, which goes: Make me an instrument of your peace.
On October 4th we celebrate the birthday of St. Francis of Assisi. It would be nice if we could help to bring a little more love and peace in this world of strife. Do a good deed and ask for nothing in return. Live more simply, be kind to others especially the poor, and rid ourselves of our arrogance and pride. Have you had an enemy or a misunderstanding with someone before? Maybe it’s time to mend differences for the sake of peace.
