Nothing is more touching than to be given a warm welcome when you are a guest in a friend’s or colleague’s home. We once paid a visit to a long unseen friend who had just moved into a new apartment. Prior to that, she had been living in a little cramped house with her mom, brothers and sisters. When we called on her she hadn’t finished unpacking and most of the new furniture hadn’t been delivered yet. The living room was a sea of boxes and crates, and the bedroom had only a small mattress. We sat in her dining room, the only room with a complete set of furniture – a dining table and chairs. Time flew as we laughed and chatted, until it was time for dinner. Our friend slipped out for a while and came back with a bottle of soda, some barbecue, and chips – this being the only cooked food she was able to buy from a nearby store. It was a very simple dinner but nevertheless, a most memorable one for all of us.
Shakespeare’s quotation from his play The Comedy of Errors, “Small cheer and great welcome makes a merry feast,” vividly reminds us of that visit.
